The birth of a new song for Block 13

block 13 kings of joy lgbtqia+ making a difference queers of joy Sep 08, 2022

A newly released song 'Joy' penned by one of our Kings of Joy, Bridget Harilaou aka Trans Mission, was written as a love letter to our LGBTQ+ friends living in one of the largest refugee camps in the world, in Block 13, Kakuma, Kenya. When you buy the song from Bandcamp, you will donate much-needed funds to our friends who spend it on basic food supplies, medicines, a school for their children and safety lights at night which is when they are often attacked.

With uplifting lyrics filled with connection, joy and hope, coupled with Bridget's raw yet haunting vocals straight from the heart, this track has been produced by Malaika Mfalme, co-producer, co-host of Queers of Joy and much-loved musician including one of half of trans indie act, Boy and Bucket.

When Lucretia, our friend who is a young trans woman and human rights defender living in Block 13 heard this song, she said, "I can't stop listening to it. I feel like am more strong and energetic every single second of listening to it. All I can say is that thank you for this."

Thank you for this gift Bridget! Please enjoy, buy and share.

Lyrics:

Send some joy and some love to our friends at Kakuma

Over the sea and sky

If you feel alone, if we seem so far

This song reminds you where we are

It's a fight, it's a fight, for a right to life

I know it's been hard just to survive

You don't just have to be strong

You can be soft, you can be fun

Those moments show us how far we've come

Send some joy and some love to our friends at Kakuma

Over the sea and sky

If you feel alone, if we seem so far

This song reminds you where we are

In my mind, in my mind, I see a stream

We're all walking down it hand in hand

We drop all our kids at school

Then we walk along the river

We love it how we didn't let this life make us bitter

Give me that sweet, sweet hope

Bring me back to that moment you first said my name

Oh and I shave my hair and I felt sun and wind and rain

On my head, oh the joy

Send some joy and some love to our friends at Kakuma

Over the sea and sky

If you feel alone, if we seem so far

This song reminds you where we are

This song reminds you where we are

A song for Block 13, BIPOC queer refugees in Kakuma refugee camp Kenya.
